Can Premature Ejaculation (PE) Be Cured With Ashwagandha?

Ancient medicinal herbs have long been revered by societies for their healing abilities. But they’re not a one-stop solution to all your problems. In this article, we will explain whether ashwagandha can help with PE, some other ways in which you can treat PE, and how ashwagandha can be taken for other health benefits.

What Is Ashwagandha?

Withania somnifera, more commonly known as ashwagandha, is a small shrub native to India and Africa.

The name ashwagandha comes from the plant’s distinct smell, which most describe as a strong horse-like odour. In Sanskrit, ashwa means horse, and gandha means smell.

For many centuries, people in India have used the root of ashwagandha in traditional Indian medicine called Ayurveda.

Just like traditional Chinese or Western medicine, Ayurveda is considered a form of medical care by many Indians. It is a form of alternative medicine system said to rebalance a person’s body, mind, spirit, bringing harmony to the body’s constitution and life forces.

Ayurvedic medication aims to improve stress and consciousness by eliminating impurities. Herbs like ashwagandha, common spices, and other plants such as oils are frequently used in Ayurvedic treatment.

By grinding the orange tuberous root of the plant into a fine powder, the root powder becomes an adaptogenic food (plant foods thought to have health benefits).

These powders can be mixed into teas, or even taken as supplements like pills, tablets, or capsules. Research has shown that taking ashwagandha has been linked to lower stress levels and better sleep quality.

What Causes Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is not an uncommon condition. In fact, between 30% to 40% of men experience it at some point in their life.

According to the American Urological Association, about one in five men between the ages of 18 to 59 reported incidences of PE. This makes PE the most common type of sexual dysfunction in men.

There are many factors, such as psychological and biological factors, that can increase the likelihood of PE.

Some common psychological causes that can contribute to PE include:
• Performance anxiety. Could happen due to different reasons such as nervousness, anxiousness, guilty, or excitement during a sexual encounter.
• Depression
• Stress
• Relationship problems

Other common causes that might contribute to PE:
•Excessive feelings of sex
• Hypersensitivity of the penis glands
• Excessive porn consumption
• Excessive masturbation
• Chemical imbalance of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin or dopamine

Although the above list is not exhaustive, there’s little to worry about. While many men might feel worried about their PE issues, experiencing it from time to time is often not a cause for concern.

But if these early orgasms start to interfere greatly with your sex life and cause distress, your best cause of action would be to consider talking to a doctor.

Can Ashwagandha Help With Premature Ejaculation?

Ashwagandha is not medically recognised as a proper form of treatment for premature ejaculation.

While it does boast several health benefits, taking ashwagandha in a bid to cure issues with early climaxes will not work.

In fact, some scientists have tried measuring the effectiveness of ashwagandha in improving PE, but these studies did not yield significant results.

In one study, scientists tested the efficacy of ashwagandha on the management of ED, specifically psychogenic ED. About half of these men also had PE problems.

About 95 men took courses of ashwagandha for 60 days. However, results showed that there was no improvement and no relief provided to treating their ED or PE.

So How Can I Treat Premature Ejaculation?

Fear not, PE is a very treatable problem.

While PE remains the most prevalent male sexual health issue, affecting up to 20-40% of men globally, there are medications out there that have proven successful in treating men with PE.

One such drug is called Priligy, an FDA-approved drug that helps men last longer.

Priligy contains dapoxetine, an active ingredient that is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).

By boosting serotonin levels in the body, Priligy causes delayed reactions in parts of the brain that controls ejaculation. This can help prolong the time it takes for one to orgasm.

Many men who have taken Priligy have reported improved control over their ejaculation.

As of now, Priligy is a prescription-only drug that can only be distributed by a licensed medical professional for men aged 18 to 64.

If you’re thinking of taking it, make sure to consult a doctor first as Priligy can interfere with certain health conditions and medications.

Does Ashwagandha Have Health Benefits?

While ashwagandha doesn’t help with PE, there’s still a reason why it has strong roots in ancient medicine.

Modern science has linked ashwagandha consumption to various health benefits.

Since ashwagandha is an adaptogen, it’s best known for its ability to help the body resist stressors of all kinds.

The biologically active chemical constituents of alkaloids in ashwagandha can help reduce the physical and mental stress of the body and even alter the immune system.

Here’s a list of some benefits that ashwagandha carries:

1. Reduced Stress And Anxiety

Chronic stress can put your health at risk, elevating blood pressure and sugar levels.

In response to that, the body releases stress hormones to help fight against stress.

Cortisol, one such stress hormone, is released by the adrenal glands in response to stress or when your blood sugar levels drop too low.

Studies on ashwagandha have linked the herb to reduced cortisol levels.

In one study, 64 participants with a history of chronic stress took ashwagandha supplements for 60 days.

Those that had taken ashwagandha had experienced a 30% average reduction in cortisol levels compared to those that did not.

The findings of the study suggest that ashwagandha root extract helped reduce cortisol levels, while also being a mostly safe and effective adaptogen, thereby improving self-assessed quality of life.

2. Improvement In Mood And Memory

Ashwagandha has also been used in Ayurvedic medicine to improve brain function and boost memory.

In one controlled study, 20 healthy male participants were given ashwagandha extract. Men who took 500 mg of extract daily reported improved cognitive and psychomotor performance compared to men who took a placebo.

However, studies on ashwagandha use on humans are still limited and more testing needs to be done.

3. Boost In Male Fertility

For men with low sperm count or weak sperm motility, ashwagandha seems to be a strong contender for improving these conditions.

Ashwagandha supplements have been shown to improve both testosterone levels, which are essential for normal male sexual development and functions, and also reproductive health.

In one study of over 75 infertile men, the group was treated with ashwagandha and showed a significant increase in testosterone levels after treatment.

The group also showed increased levels of luteinising hormones (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH), good indicators of semen quality.

How Can I Take Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha root extract can be found in capsules and tinctures, but it is most commonly sold as a powder.

Traditionally, powdered ashwagandha root is mixed with ghee, honey, or water and ingested or applied topically to the skin.

Since ashwagandha powder has a very earthy and bitter flavour, many people tend to mix it into sweet desserts or hot beverages to make it easier to ingest.

Here’s a simple way to take ashwagandha:
1. Take ¼ to ½ teaspoon of ashwagandha root powder.
2. Boil it in 2 cups of water.
3. Add a pinch of ginger, and boil till it reduces to half.
4. Let the mixture cool. Add honey to taste.
5. Drink the tea mixture for relaxation.

With Vigour, you can enhance your sexual and physical performance in and out of the bedroom.

How much Ashwagandha Should I Take?

There is currently no standard dosage for ashwagandha, as it varies by your needs, but most people use between about 1 to 6 grams (100 to 600mg) of the herb daily.

There are also standardized extracts available, but if you are unsure, ask your doctor for advice before taking ashwagandha as it might interfere with certain health conditions.

Be careful with taking ashwagandha. In large doses, ashwagandha can also cause some adverse side effects such as an upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting.

The Takeaway

Ashwagandha does not help improve premature ejaculation, but it can boost male fertility and testosterone levels.

More studies and research still need to be conducted on the little herb, before deeming it viable for medical use in the field of PE treatment.

But taking ashwagandha as a health supplement is generally safe in moderation, and can improve your well-being.

For men, ashwagandha supplements can boost testosterone levels, sperm count, and motility.

But always remember to consult a doctor if you are unsure, as ashwagandha might not be suitable for people with medical conditions like high or low blood pressure, diabetes, or autoimmune diseases.
