Does Garlic Help With Erectile Dysfunction?

Embarrassed to talk to their physician about erectile dysfunction issues, men often search for home remedies to treat ED. A common natural remedy touted to treat ED is garlic. This article aims to find out if there is any scientific evidence that proves the positive effect of garlic on erectile dysfunction treatment.

What Are The Potential Benefits Of Garlic For ED?

Garlic contains compounds including allicin and S-allyl cysteine that may have cardiovascular benefits. Since ED is largely a vascular condition (involving insufficient blood flow to the penis), anything that improves cardiovascular health could theoretically benefit erectile function.

A 2013 study in rats found that S-allyl cysteine helped restore erectile function through inhibition of reactive oxygen species generation. Garlic has also been shown to have blood pressure-lowering effects and may improve overall circulation. In traditional medicine in western Uganda, garlic has historically been used in managing sexual impotence.

However, there are no direct human clinical trials conclusively demonstrating that garlic can effectively treat erectile dysfunction. Any benefits are likely to be modest and indirect, through improvements in general cardiovascular health.
