Garlic contains compounds including allicin and S-allyl cysteine that may have cardiovascular benefits. Since ED is largely a vascular condition (involving insufficient blood flow to the penis), anything that improves cardiovascular health could theoretically benefit erectile function.
A 2013 study in rats found that S-allyl cysteine helped restore erectile function through inhibition of reactive oxygen species generation. Garlic has also been shown to have blood pressure-lowering effects and may improve overall circulation. In traditional medicine in western Uganda, garlic has historically been used in managing sexual impotence.
However, there are no direct human clinical trials conclusively demonstrating that garlic can effectively treat erectile dysfunction. Any benefits are likely to be modest and indirect, through improvements in general cardiovascular health.
